The end and goal of any society
as it addresses the problem of education is to raise the ability,
the initiative and the cultural level, and with all of that
the survival level, of that society.
L. Ron Hubbard.
Lack
of an effective education is one of the greatest barriers to
success and happiness faced by our children and, for that matter,
any individual. Whether it affects a youngster from a less-privileged
neighborhood in an American city who has been driven to gangs
and drugs by the lack of employment opportunities, or a farmer
in Ghana denied entrance into the 21st century economy by an
inability to read and comprehend, ineffective education is the
common denominator to many of the worlds problems. To
a substantial degree, educational failings generate many of
the ills we face in our societies, from intolerance and racism
to drugs, poverty and economic failure.
With the support and guidance of ABLE, Applied Scholastics International
opens the doors to opportunity by implementing effective educational
programs in a vast array of settings for both children and adults.
Fundamental to these programs is the understanding that education
is far more than just being able to read, but includes being
able to understand and utilize the information which one reads.
Thus one becomes able to think with the datameaning
to use it in order to better ones life. To achieve this,
Applied Scholastics utilizes the educational methods developed
by L. Ron Hubbard, which he termed Study Technologyspecific
techniques and methods that enable an individual to understand
and overcome the common barriers or blocks to full comprehension.
Technology here means the methods of application of the principles
of something, as opposed to mere knowledge of the thing itself.
So this is study with tools which enable the individual to understand
and apply what he is studying, not simply to memorize it in
rote fashion.
Applied Scholastics International was started in 1972 by a group
of Southern California teachers who worked together to utilize
Study Technology within the education system. Since then, Applied
Scholastics staff and representatives have worked in partnership
with government agencies, educators, schools, corporations,
community groups and parents in numerous countries. Today, more
than 300 Applied Scholastics affiliated schools, tutoring centers
and community literacy centers bring hope to millions in 45
countries on six continents.
